Timber decking in Sheffield

Timber is the traditional choice: warm underfoot, natural to look at and cheaper to fit than composite. It needs a little care each year to keep it at its best.

Treated softwood decking typically costs £60 to £130 per square metre installed, and hardwood £110 to £250.

What a good quote includes

Six things to ask every installer to put in writing, so you can compare quotes properly.

  1. Pressure-treated timber, graded for ground contact

Joists and posts near the ground should be treated to the higher Use Class 4 standard. Ask for it in writing.

  2. Grooved or smooth boards

Grooves are traditional but hold water and dirt. Many installers now recommend smooth or anti-slip boards.

  3. Stainless or coated screws

They resist rust and the black staining that cheap screws leave in timber.

  4. Ventilation under the deck

Air moving under the boards helps the timber dry out, which is what makes it last.

  5. End grain sealed

Cut ends should be treated on site, because that is where rot starts.

  6. A care plan

Ask what treatment the installer recommends and how often, so you know the real running cost.

How it gets built

  1. Survey and fixed price

The installer measures, checks the ground and talks through softwood or hardwood.

  2. Groundwork

Ground cleared and levelled, membrane laid and supports set.

  3. Frame

Treated joists fixed level, with steps or raised sections built in.

  4. Boards and finish

Boards screwed down, edges finished, cut ends treated and any steps, rails or lights fitted.
