Composite decking in Sheffield

Composite decking looks like timber but does not rot, splinter or need staining. Fitted on a proper frame, it lasts for decades with little more than a wash.

Installed composite decking typically costs £100 to £200 per square metre in the UK. A 15 m² deck usually comes to £1,500 to £3,000.

Is composite right for you?

  • You want a deck that needs a wash, not a weekend of sanding and staining every year.
  • Your garden is damp or shady, where timber tends to go green and slippery.
  • You have children or pets and want boards with no splinters.
  • You plan to stay in the house for years, so the higher upfront price pays back.
  • You want an even colour that stays close to how it looked on day one.

What a good quote includes

Six things to ask every installer to put in writing, so you can compare quotes properly.

  1. Capped boards

Capped composite has a protective outer shell that resists stains and fading. Ask whether the boards are capped and which brand they are.

  2. A frame that will outlast the boards

Treated timber joists are common; aluminium or composite joists last longer. Ask about joist spacing, which should follow the board maker's instructions.

  3. Ground prepared properly

Weed membrane, a level base and drainage underneath stop sinking and keep the frame dry.

  4. Gaps left for movement

Composite expands and contracts with temperature. The installer should follow the maker's gap guidance at the ends and edges.

  5. Hidden fixings and finished edges

Clip systems hide the screws, and fascia boards cover the frame for a clean finish.

  6. Both warranties in writing

The board maker's warranty (often 25 years or more) and the installer's own guarantee on the workmanship.

How it gets built

  1. Survey and fixed price

The installer measures, checks the ground and drainage, and helps you choose boards and colour.

  2. Groundwork

Old decking or turf removed, the ground levelled, membrane laid and the frame supports set.

  3. Frame

Joists fixed level at the right spacing, with any steps or raised sections built in.

  4. Boards and finish

Boards clipped down, fascias, edging, steps, lighting and any balustrade fitted. Most decks take two to five days.

Questions people ask

How much does composite decking cost per m² in Sheffield?

Installed composite decking typically costs £100 to £200 per square metre, depending on the boards, the frame and the ground. Our decking cost calculator works out a range for your size.

How long does composite decking last?

Good capped composite boards often come with warranties of 25 years or more. A frame built properly underneath matters just as much. Read how long composite decking lasts.

Is composite decking slippery?

Modern capped boards with a textured surface are generally less slippery than timber that has gone green. See is composite decking slippery.

Does composite decking get hot?

Dark composite boards can get hot in direct summer sun. Lighter colours stay cooler, so choose a paler shade for a south-facing deck.

Do I need planning permission for composite decking?

Not usually, if the deck is no more than 30 cm above the ground. Read planning permission for decking for the full rules.

Can composite decking be laid on a slope?

Yes. The frame is built level on adjustable supports or posts, with steps where needed. Raised decks cost more and may need planning permission.
